One of the first questions Bali villa guests ask is: should we hire a private chef, or just eat at restaurants? The honest answer is that both can be wonderful, and the right choice depends on group size, location, traffic, dietary needs and what kind of evening you want. This guide breaks down the real costs and trade-offs for 2026, with specific IDR numbers from my own pricing — so you can decide with eyes open.
The Direct Cost Comparison (per person, one dinner)
Below is a like-for-like comparison for a mid-range dinner in Bali, comparing a typical Seminyak or Canggu sit-down restaurant with a private chef dinner at your villa. Restaurant numbers are 2026 averages from popular spots; private chef numbers are from my pricing page (per-person Indonesian or Western dinner menu plus the IDR 800,000 dinner chef hire fee, split across the group).
Restaurant assumption: IDR 250k mains + 1 drink + IDR 50k pp transport (Grab/Gojek both ways from villa) + 10% service. Private chef assumption: IDR 300k per-person menu (mid-range, e.g. Indonesian or Mexican) + IDR 800k dinner chef hire fee split across the group.
Side-by-Side Experience Comparison
When a Restaurant Is the Better Call
I run a private chef service, but I will be honest — there are nights when going out simply wins. Pick a restaurant when:
- You are two adults wanting atmosphere. A beachfront seat at Single Fin in Uluwatu, a rooftop in Seminyak, or a candlelit warung in Ubud is its own experience. A villa can't replicate that.
- You want to graze across multiple cuisines. Hopping between a satay stall, a poke bowl place and a wine bar is great for sampling Bali. A single chef does one menu well, not five.
- Your villa kitchen is genuinely minimal. Most villas are fine, but some serviced apartments only have a kettle. Mention this when booking — I usually still find a way, but a restaurant may be simpler.
When a Private Chef Wins
- Groups of 4 or more. The per-day chef hire fee is fixed (IDR 800k for dinner) and splits across the group, so the per-person cost drops fast.
- Families with kids. Eating at your villa means kids can swim, nap, eat, and play between courses without you watching the time.
- Dietary restrictions. Halal, vegan, gluten-free, severe allergies — all handled in one kitchen with no cross-contamination risk.
- Special occasions. Anniversaries, birthdays, proposals — a private dinner at your villa is calmer and more personal than a busy restaurant.
- You are renting a beautiful villa. If your villa has a pool, garden, or sunset view, you may as well use them for dinner.
What the Numbers Don't Show
The cost table covers food, drink and transport. It doesn't capture two things that matter on holiday: time and convenience. A restaurant dinner in Seminyak from a Canggu villa typically eats 4 hours of your evening once you count the Grab ride out, the wait, the meal, and the ride back. A villa chef dinner takes whatever you want — eat at 7pm, take a swim break, finish with dessert at 10pm, no rush.
If you're in Bali for 7 nights, doing 2 or 3 villa dinners with a private chef and 3 or 4 nights out at restaurants is the sweet spot for most groups. Reach out via the booking form or message me on WhatsApp with your group size and dates and I'll put together a quote.
FAQ
Is a private chef cheaper than a restaurant in Bali?
For groups of 4 or more, yes — almost always, once you add transport and drinks markup. For couples, restaurants are usually slightly cheaper unless you choose a high-end dinner menu where the gap closes.
How far in advance do I need to book?
48 hours minimum for menu planning and grocery sourcing. During peak season (July–August, December–January), 7–14 days ahead is safer.
Can I do half-and-half — some restaurant nights, some private chef nights?
Absolutely, and it's what most guests do. Two or three private chef dinners across a week, mixed with restaurant outings, is the sweet spot.
What if my villa doesn't have a good kitchen?
I've cooked in hundreds of villa kitchens — from gourmet to basic. As long as there's a stove and a fridge, I can usually make it work. For BBQ packages I bring my own portable grill.
